Neighborhood Villages Issues Statement on Head Start Closures and Terminations
Boston Regional Head Start office is one of five closed across the country; all federal staff were terminated effective immediately
BOSTON, MA (April 1, 2025) – Neighborhood Villages has released a statement in response to the closure of the Region 1 Office of Head Start in Boston, along with four other regional offices across the country, and the termination of federal staff at those locations. The Region 1 office oversees Head Start programs in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
Lauren Kennedy, co-founder of Neighborhood Villages, issued the following statement:
“Head Start provides critical services and support to some of the most underserved families and children here in the Commonwealth and across our nation. The callous move by the Trump Administration to close regional Head Start offices undermines one of the most effective and impactful early education and anti-poverty initiatives in American history.
“We expect our federal elected leaders to prioritize the well-being of our youngest learners, not to jeopardize their access to the early education and family resources that set them up to thrive. Every child should have access to a high-quality early education, and Head Start plays a fundamental role in making sure as many children as possible do. At Neighborhood Villages, we stand with our Head Start partners. Along with the early education community, we will continue to fight for the early education system that every child deserves – nationally and here at home in Massachusetts.”
